Data Center Physical Security: Key Takeaways from Data Center World

As hyperscale growth accelerates, industry leaders discuss the shift toward automated, centralized security models

At this year’s Data Center World, data center security entered a new phase – one defined by automation, scale, and reduced human dependency.

During the panel “Automation Advances in Data Center Physical Security,” Orion’s leadership joined industry peers to explore how physical security is evolving alongside the rapid expansion of hyperscale infrastructure. The session brought together a full room of end users, security consultants, integrators, and data center service providers, all navigating the same fundamental shift.

Steve Caroselli, Founder and CEO of Orion Entrance Control, Inc. moderated the discussion and shared a growing need for consolidated security infrastructure: environments where multiple layers of access control, screening, and monitoring are unified into a single, intelligent system.

“When you bring security into a centralized model, you reduce operational complexity and create consistency across the entire facility. But to make that work at scale, automating the security function is foundational. That’s what enables data centers to move toward more autonomous, even ‘dim’ or ‘dark’ operating models.”

While automation is reshaping how security is executed, another shift is happening earlier in the lifecycle: security is becoming a core design consideration.

Orion ECI’s VP Data Center Business Development, Mike McGovern, emphasized that this is no longer an afterthought in the build process:

“What we’re seeing now is a clear shift in how data centers are being designed and constructed. Physical security is no longer something that gets layered on at the end, it’s being treated as critical infrastructure from day one.”

Orion extends a huge thank you to the co-panelists for this insightful session and to our partners for the opportunity to demonstrate our technology at your booths; it was a pleasure collaborating with you to drive the next generation of data center security.

Orion DataGuard™ was developed in direct response to the challenges discussed on the panel – specifically, the need to centralize, automate, and standardize physical security functions within increasingly unmanned data center environments.  Designed as a modular, all-in-one entry and screening system, DataGuard™ consolidates multiple layers of security into a single controlled point.
